Chapter nine

Juliet

Even after Chancellor Douglas called me into his office to “go over the rules” here at Buxley, things have been going great for weeks. I gave the chancellor my assurance that I wouldn’t dream of breaking any of the rules at the university, smiled innocently, and reassured him that Parker and I are getting along better now and that we’re just friends and colleagues.

It’s actually been pretty damn wonderful. Parker has taken me on a few more “working dinners,” and sparks have been flying between us both on campus and off. Of course, anytime we are on campus or out in the public eye, we’ve been making sure to be very careful to keep the chemistry undercover. And in our private moments we seek each other out in our working and private hours more and more. Like a secret society, we whisper and side-glance in our own language; a growing comfort between us fostering a deeper respect and understanding of our motivations and dreams.

He keeps me on my toes with his witty humor and playful banter, and I want him desperately every time we’re anywhere near each other.

But after our rendezvous in our office a few weeks ago, we both agreed to keep busy and not rock the boat too much, since there are rumors flying around about the possibility that we might be more than professional colleagues.

"Besides," Parker wrapped his arms around me on his sofa one evening after work, "I want to keep you all to myself."

"Oh really?" I giggled as he settled me down onto his lap and I draped my arm around his shoulders.

"Yes. If you haven't noticed, you bring out my jealous streak. And…a lot of other streaks I can't seem to control when I'm with you."

"Like?" The light in Parker's eyes seemed to darken, shifting into a distant gaze I couldn't quite read.

"You know, my asshole demeanor didn't just pop up overnight. It's taken years to cultivate. Out of necessity and my own pride, I'm sure. Growing up as a kid, I never wanted people to feel sorry for me." Parker took my hand and intertwined it with his. "And as soon as you showed up all sunshine and fire, I don't know…you just got under my skin."

I squeezed his hand in reassurance, respecting he was probably unloading a deeply vulnerable boundary. And somehow, I felt the weight of responsibility to protect this emerging side of Parker. And I felt the resolve to.

I’ve also seen to something else that needed to be resolved—I let Elijah down easy. He’s a good guy, and he’s been very supportive of my time here as his teacher. But I’m so completely smitten with Parker now that I just don’t even have room in my head to think about anyone else trying to get my attention, not to mention, it’s just wrong.

“I can’t believe a student had a crush on you!” Sarabeth says as we stroll across campus with our coffees after classes. “Was he upset when you told him you weren’t interested?”

“Not at all.
